About Me
My Story
Hello! My name is Cathy Cooney, PT. I have been a Registered Physiotherapist here in Ottawa since 1997. Early in my career I worked in the hospital system but quickly found out that outpatient physiotherapy in a community clinic was the place I wanted to be at the time. My background is in orthopaedic and sports physiotherapy and in 2006, after having 2 children of my own, I trained to become one of Ottawa's first Pelvic Floor Physiotherapists. Happily, I found my passion in Women's Health! After co-owning a busy and thriving patient-centered, multi-disciplinary physiotherapy clinic in Manotick, ON for 11 years, it was time for a change. In treating many, many mums in my clinic for blocked milk ducts using therapeutic ultrasound, I saw too many of those mums struggling to get to the clinic for treatment; often arriving feeling stressed from trying to arrive on time, running on a lack of sleep, having pain/worry about their block, all while caring for their little one and themselves as best they could. Even though my children are now young adults, I clearly remember the difficulties of breastfeeding and of being a new mum. So.... here I am today. After furthering my training in the Physiotherapy Approach to Breastfeeding, I established a mobile practice to assesses and treat both mum and baby (the feeding "dyad"), in the comfort of their own home. My hope is that in-home treatment alleviates the extra stress of getting out the door on time, maybe with a sibling in tow, finding a babysitter for the sibling, or having to take public transportation with a newborn baby. Having a blocked milk duct is more than enough to have to deal with! I am here to help and I come to you!
